ACT ONE

INTERIOR: A luxury apartment in New York City:

The boys are eight years old. Dev is having a nightmare about the night his mother was killed. He awakens in a cold sweat. Then he jumps up and looks under his bed at a small box. He thinks to himself. "She said when the time is right I will know what to do. "Max peeps into the room. He startles Dev.

MAX

Aren’t you late for school?

DEV

Ah man dad I’m sorry. Dillin was suppose to pick us up. I guess he forgot.

MAX

That doesn’t explain why you got up late.

DEV

He was supposed to wake us with a phone call before he came by. That's why I wasn’t really worried about staying up late last night. Besides it's the last day of school; lighten up a little dad.

MAX

Well I’m about to be late myself so go ahead and take the Benz but I don’t wanna see a scratch on it when you bring it back.

DEV

Good lookin out dad.

MAX

I’m probable gonna be late getting home tonight so you and Freddy are going to have to order out.

DEV

But Dad, remember we’re going to Evon’s party tonight?

MAX

Must have slipped my mind. Oh well have fun tonight and don’t do anything I wouldn’t do.

DEV

Come on dad you know me I’m the good guy remember? (Smiles)

MAX

What ever you say Dev. Oh yea tell Freddy that Laretta called and don’t forget not a scratch on the car.

DEV

No problem dad.

Max left and Dev went to take a shower. After the shower he grabbed the keys to the car and met Freddy in the kitchen.

FREDDY

So what’s up? Did your plan work or what?

DEV pulled the keys out of his pocket.

FREDDY

I knew you could do it.

DEV

Then why were you doubling?

FREDDY

I was just keeping you up on your toes.

DEV

Yea right! Lets get out of here man. You know you don’t wanna keep Laretta waiting.

They walk out of the apartment.

FREDDY

So man what’s the deal with you and Sierria?

DEV

Not a damn thing. Evon is and always will be the one I love.

FREDDY

You better hope Evon don’t find out you two use to date.

DEV

Hopefully she won’t.

They walk outside the apartment and get into the car. Dev pops in a tape and they ride off.

CUT TO EXTERIOR:

Dev, Freddy, Erick, Kalvin and Dillin pull up and park in the school’s parking lot. They all got out of the car and walked into the school.

INTERIOR: In the hallway of the school.

DEV

Evon’s still having the party tonight right?

ERICK

What the hell? Man you’re her boyfriend you should know this stuff. Man you’re making us look bad with questions like that you’re suppose to be the smart one.

DEV

The reason I asked was because she told me yesterday that she was going to cancel it.

ERICK

Man I’ll kick her ass in the throat if she cancels that party tonight

DEV

I hope your legs grow back fast too.

ERICK

I was just playing man, no need to get all hostile on me.

DILLIN

Hey Dev what’s up with you and that girl Sierria?

DEV

Man is you and Freddy thinking with the same mind today? He asked me that earlier today.

ERICK

Hey if you don’t want her you know I would love to take her.

DEV

Just like I told Freddy, Evon is my girl and I’m happy with her.

ERICK

Man you talk like ya'll married or something.

DEV

I’m just crazy about Evon man.

ERICK

Tell me something; you not wanting to be with Sierria it don't have anything to do with the fact that she is Nate Santiogo’s daughter do it?

DEV

No, it’s all about Evon. Ok, her being Nate’s daughter does have a little something to do with it but mostly it’s all about Evon.

ERICK

Then why did you date her before?

DEV

Because I didn’t know she was Nate’s daughter.

ERICK

Hey man we’ll finish this later. Evon’s coming up behind you.

Evon, Laretta and Melissa are walking towards the boys. Evon walks over and kisses Dev. Laretta kisses Freddy, and Melissa kisses Erick.

DEV

Copy cats! They weren’t gonna kiss until they saw us.

ERICK

You copied us because we’re the best looking couple at this school.

EVON

(Gave them the talk to the hand expression) Well, anyway Dev, don’t forget you promised to help me get the party ready.

DEV

Come on baby you know I don’t go back on my promises.

ERICK

You need to hurry up and get to class so I can copy that work we did in class yesterday.

EVON

You need to find yourself a do girl cause I’m not the one. You should’ve done it at home last night.

ERICK

I got a needy girl and a part-time job. I don’t have time for homework!

Melissa slaps the back of his head.

ERICK

What baby?

EVON

So you’ll be ready to help me this afternoon Dev?

DEV

You know I will baby.

ERICK

(Jealous) Corny Asses.

Evon and the girls walk off.

ERICK

Dev I see right now it ain't working out between you, Evon and me. So for both or sake I think you oughta let her go.

DEV

You do know I’m gonna tell he what you said right?

ERICK

I’m sorry man. Don’t tell.

As Evon and her friends walk down the hail they run into Sierria and her Mends.

SIERRIA

(Half smile) Hi EVON.

EVON

(Turns her head) What ever!

Evon’s crew and Sierria’s crew all walk in different directions away from each other.

SIERRIA to Nikki

Did you see the fear in her eyes?

NIKKI

She was shaking so hard that she caused a chain reaction to her friends.

EVON

(Talking to her friends) Just wanna get on her ass just once. I bet ya shell respect me then.

LARETTA

You should’ve punched her in the mouth as she passed us.

MELISSA

I don’t even think she’s really worth fighting.

EVON

You’re right Melissa, forget her.

LARETTA

Besides everyone knows you would destroy her.

EVON

Girl you just don't know how right you are.

INTERIOR: Art class Dev, Kalvin, Dillin, Laretta, Sierria and her girls. Dev is drawing a picture of his mother. Laretta is flipping through a magazine. Kalvin and Dillin about girls. Sierria and her friends are watching plotting.

KALVIN

Man, the bell needs to hurry up and ring man we got things to do.

DILLIN

Yeah my Niger...

Kalvin slaps him hard.

DILLIN

Ouch! Oh, I forgot I’m white.

KALVIN

Don’t forget it again!

DILLIN

Man I been hanging out with you long enough for you to ease up on how hard you slap me when that word slips out.

SIERRIA

Dev Chino, what’s up with not calling me last night?

DEV

What’s up with not bothering me today?

NIKKI

Dev's weak anyway. Why are you wasting your time on him he has a girl?

SIERRIA

Just look at him.

NIKKI

I know he looks good but looks aren’t everything. He has to be interested in you too. So far I haven’t seen any indication that he is.

DILLIN

So what time is the party starting tonight?

SIERRIA

What party? Nobody said anything about a party to me.

DEV

There’s no party, He’s just wishing out loud.

SIERRIA

Somebody you know is having a party tonight. Don't worry Dev by the end of the day Ill know.

KALVIN

It doesn’t matter anyway because nobody wants you there.

SIERRIA

Shut up choirboy!

KALVIN

That’s right, but you need to go to church old evil girl.

Dev wrote on his desk, Dev and Evon Forever.' Sierria notices it and rolls her eyes at Dev.

CUT TO INTERIOR: Classroom. Freddy, Evon and Erick. Freddy is asleep, Erick is joking around and Evon is writing a letter.

MRS. LAWRENCE

Freddy wake up! Freddy, Freddy! You see class; this is what happens when you stay out all night partying. I guess he forgot today is the last day of school, not yesterday.

Erick reaches over and taps Freddy on his back) Yea Freddy wake up man.

FREDDY

(Mumbles) Damn girl you’re fine.

ERICK

Freddy has a crush on Doris the lunchroom lady. That might be whom he’s thinking about right now.

MRS. LAWRENCE

Isn’t she a man?

FREDDY

(Wakes up) I heard what you said Erick, I’ll see you after school.

ERICK

Mrs. Lawrence, handle this!

MRS. LAWRENCE

Sorry Erick, you’re on your own.

As they spoke the lights flicker.

FREDDY

What’s wrong with the lights?

MRS. LAWRENCE

I have no Idea.

ERICK

Maybe somebody finally threw a radio into the pool while coach Roberts takes his evening swim.

MRS. LAWRENCE

Erick you’re so wrong for that.

EVON

You guys don't watch the news much do you? Today was the day that the Young Mafia member who was caught last year was put to death.

ERICK

Yea I heard about them. My personal opinion, I think they were framed.

MRS. LAWRENCE

I think they were framed also but there’s nothing we can do about it so let's go on to another topic.

ERICK

I heard that they were so bad that it took almost the whole entire police force to capture them. They say some of them weren't captured.

MRS. LAWRENCE

Can we get back to a class subject please?

FREDDY

We’re at attention Mrs. Lawrence.

The bell rings and everyone rushes out the door.

MRS. LAWRENCE

(Looking sad) Go on everyone, run along forget about me. All I did was teach you, and grew to know and love each and everyone of you.

EVON

Don’t worry Mrs. Lawrence, no one’s gonna forget you. You were a great teacher and I’m sure everyone else thought that too.

MRS. LAWRENCE

Thank you Evon, you were always my favorite and smartest student.

EVON

I try. I guess I’m lucky Dev’s not in this class huh?

MRS. LAWRENCE

Don’t say that, I think you’re just as smart as Dev.

EVON

He has all the awards to prove his case though.

Dev was standing at the door all along listening to their conversation.

DEV

Personally I think you’re the smartest by far.

EVON

See he even knows what to say in a situation like this.

MRS. LAWRENCE

I expect things like that from the protégé of the smartest woman I've ever known.

DEV

(Intrigued) You knew my mother?

MRS. LAWRENCE

I only met her once but I Will never forget that day. Before I became a teacher I worked at a place called Quinton’s Technology. She came there one day to show case her new invention called the Forwind-Tazor. How she got this hand held device to generate and release electricity in the way that it did is beyond me? It could even make a force field strong enough to block out bullets and small bombs. Quinton's partner tried to get her to sell him the weapon but she said that the weapon was just to get his attention for another invention she was working on. After they talked for a while they came to an agreement. I tried to listen in to hear what the invention was but Quinton’s partner caught me eaves- dropping and fired me on the spot.

EVON

His partner?

MRS. LAWRENCE

Yeah, Nate Santiogo. I hated him so much. Now that I think about it, I never got a chance to meet Quinton. In fact, I never saw him.

Dev just looked at her like he was wounded by her words.

MRS. LAWRENCE

What’s wrong Dev?

EVON

His mother was murdered by that snake Nate Santiago and he walked Scott-free.

MRS. LAWRENCE

I knew she was murdered but I didn’t know he was the one who did it.

EVON

What planet were you living on? Everybody knew that, even the judge who let him go.

DEV

The Blue Enhancer formula.

MRS. LAWRENCE

What?

DEV

The invention she created was a formula to enhance human abilities by tricking the brain into thinking your body is capable of increased strength, speed, and recovery.

MRS. LAWRENCE

Wow that’s amazing! Was it achieved? And what ever happened to the Forwind-Tazor?

Dev walks out.

MRS. LAWRENCE

Was it something I said?

EVON

Don’t worry about it he’ll be all right. I’ll see you later Mrs. Lawrence.

MRS. LAWRENCE

All right Evon. Take care.

Evon caught up with Dev in the hail.

EVON

Dev I’m sorry.

DEV

It’s ok.

EVON

(Concerned) Are you sure?

DEV

Yeah baby lets just go catch up with the others.

They walked down the hall until to Freddy's locker. Freddy, Erick, Kalvin, Dillin, and Laretta were there.

ERICK

Evon, "that was dirty how you closed your book when I was trying to copy your paper."

EVON

I told you I’m not letting you copy off me anymore.

ERICK

It’s the last day of school anyway. I don’t need you anymore!

EVON

I don’t care!

ERICK

My baby’s gonna let me copy off her next year anyway. Matter of fact, where is Melissa?

Laretta and Freddy walk on ahead. The others follow. Melissa walks up behind them, and they all walk outside, heading towards the parking lot. As they walk, Sierria and four other girls walk up behind them.

SIERRIA

Hi Dev, looking good. You know you would look even better over here with me.

MELISSA

Oh hell no she didn’t! Evon handle yo business!

Evon heads towards Sierria hoping to beat her down but Dev grabs her before she could get to her.

DEV

Evon, she’s not worth it. You should know by now you’re the only one I want.

SIERRIA

He says that now but sooner or later he’ll be back to me. Most likely when he gets tired of you; like the others before you.

Evon looks up at Dev with a worried look on her face. He looks back at her with a reassuring stare.

SIERRIA

You’ll soon find out that you’re just one of his temporary girls in my way.
