CHAPTER ONE
Now that the medication had wore off, her thinking was
a little clearer. She wasn’t sure how long she’d been here but, the incidents,
which had led to this predicament, were something she couldn’t forget, no
matter how she tried.
A nurse entered the room with the evenings’ meal.
Destiny motioned for her to leave it on the nightstand for later. As with most
mental institutions, she knew the food or beverage would contain more drugs,
and that’s the last thing she needed right now.
Reaching for the water pitcher, she takes a long
drink, fluffs her pillows, then lies back to relax, but only to relive the
horrid chain of events, which had brought her there.
Having turned sixteen only weeks earlier, Destiny
Cromwell, a sophomore, was among the top ten in her class at Lyndell High.
Tall, blonde, blue eyed and beautiful, she was captain of the cheerleading
squad. Students, as well as instructors, dubbed her as “Most Likely to
Succeed”.
Besides her academic achievements, she possessed a
warm and friendly disposition that made her well loved by everyone, children
and elderly alike.
Being an only child, she was the pride and joy of her
parents. For her fifteenth birthday, they’d given her a shiny sports car, since
she’d received her driving permit only days earlier.
Life couldn’t possibly get any better for a young lady
with such a promising future... (And it didn’t.)
The early October chill forced Destiny to pull her
fleece cardigan tighter about her shoulders as she made her way across the
campus parking lot and to her automobile.
It was almost four thirty, and her parents were
expecting her home in time for supper, and the usual Wednesday night “family
time,” which Mr. Cromwell had devised when she was just a small child.
Unlocking the car door, she slides behind the wheel,
ignites the engine, and races from the lot.
Halfway to her neighborhood she notices the fuel
indicator flashing in the dashboard. Pulling into a local filling station, she
jumps out and refuels, then runs inside to pay the cashier.
Back inside her automobile, she pops in the “Dixie
Chicks” newest CD and sings along as she drives.
A rustling noise from the backseat sends her curiosity
to the windshield mirror, where she detects two sinister eyes, staring from a
face, which appeared to be covered in a mask!
An involuntary scream escapes her lips, as she slams
down hard on the brakes. She’s immediately struck from behind with some blunt
object.
On the brink of unconsciousness, the last thing she
recalls is a heavy metallic chain, with an odd—looking watch, which hung around
her attacker’s neck. It brushed her face several times while he stripped her
clothing away from her body. Then, another shattering blow delivers total
blackness.
