PREFACE
This story is about an eight-year old boy,
his six-year old sister, and some of the events that happened to them. Eric is
the main character, because he was the dreamer.
His dreams were so realistic that it is hard
to believe they were only dreams.
Some of the characters Eric dreamed about
were Dinah the dinosaur, Willie the whale, Sharky the shark, Elliot the
elephant, Pat the rat, Al the alligator, and Candy the camel.
He met all these friends when he dreamed he
was flying. That used to be one of the best times of the day for Eric. His
dreams were real to him, and when you read how he met his friends and the fun
they had together, you will be delighted. You might wish that you could meet
all the friends Eric came in contact with.
I’m sure that many of you have had dreams
similar to the ones Eric did, so you will be happy to read and try to imagine
yourself being like Eric and Kim.
Can you picture yourself talking to a
dinosaur, or an elephant, or an alligator, or a whale? It’s all in here. What
they talk about will interest all of you from six to sixty, even older.
Hey, the day we stop dreaming is the day when
fun stops. So come on, enter into Eric’s dreams. You will never regret it.
I want all you children to learn to read
fluently, and feed your hearts and minds with words that will benefit you not
only now, but for the rest of your lives.
I like to look at certain types of pictures
also, but when I read a story with words that need no pictures, only my
imagination, then I enjoy the story more. This story will test your
imagination. If you can imagine the reality of Eric’s dreams, then you should
like what you are about to read.
For all of you mothers and fathers that are
concerned about your children’s future in this world that is full of all kinds
of temptations, you will appreciate the moral values mentioned by-the parents
of Eric and Kim.
Children, remember to honor your father and
your mother like Eric and Kim did.
If you do, and obey God’s will, you shall be
surprised how good you will feel within your heart.

The Bread of Life 81
Using God’s Power To Overcome
They lived on a farm in the valley, a boy and
a girl, and their mommy and daddy. The boy’s name was Eric, and the girl’s name
was Kim. Their mommy’s name was Jane, and their daddy’s name was Jim.
They fed and milked the cows in the morning,
and the cows were so happy, they said, ‘Moo, moo, moo,” all day long.
And then they fed the chickens in the chicken
coop. The chickens were so happy they said, “Cluck, cluck, cluck,” all day
long.
And then they fed the ducks in the duck pond.
The ducks were so happy they said, “Quack, quack, quack,” all day long.
And then they fed the sheep in the meadow.
The sheep were so happy they said, “Baa, baa, baa,” all day long.
After Eric and Kim got through feeding all
the cows, and all the chickens, and all the ducks, and all the sheep in the
meadow, they were very tired and hungry. They both rushed back to the house,
and were just in time for breakfast. Their mother had cooked cereal for them,
which they both liked. In addition to that, she poached some eggs and made some
toast for them.
They removed their shoes, washed up their
hands, and sat down to eat, Before anyone started to eat, Jim, their daddy,
said grace. That means, he gave thanks to God for the breakfast they were going
to eat.
After their daddy finished saying grace, Eric
and Kim drank their orange juice, and began eating the cereal first and then
the eggs and toast. It didn’t take them long to finish eating, because they
were both so hungry. Jane, their mother, smiled at their daddy when she saw how
fast they ate everything. Their daddy smiled back, because he also noticed.
Because it was their summer vacation, they
didn’t have to rush off to school. And since all their chores were done, they
could do anything they wanted to, as long as their mother and dad gave their
approval.
“Mommy,” asked Eric, “May we go down to the pond
and do some fishing, and play tag or something?”
“Of course you may, children. Only be
careful.”
They put on their
shoes, kissed their mom, and after waving to their daddy, ran out the kitchen
door.
That gave their mother and dad a little time
to be alone. After Jim had finished his breakfast, he leaned back, rubbed his
stomach, and began to sip his coffee. “Ah, that hit the spot. Jane. I enjoyed
the breakfast,” Jane never got tired from compliments. “Well, thank you, dear,”
with a smile on her face.
As Jim was sifting at the table, Jane noticed
that he had a faraway look in his eyes. “What are you thinking about Jim? You
seem to be dreaming about something.”
“Oh, I’m sorry Jane. I was just thinking how
nice it would be if we all took a vacation for about a month or so. We haven’t
had one for about five or six years, and I know we both need to get away from
the farm and relax a little bit. Besides, Eric and Kim would enjoy themselves.
What do you think?”
Jane was very pleased he wanted a vacation,
because she too wanted to get away for some needed rest. “That is a beautiful
idea, Jim. Yes, I would be happy to go somewhere. Where did you want to go?”
“Well, we could all go to Maine and rent a
cottage right near the ocean. How does that sound?”
“Sounds
good to me. When do we start?”
“As soon as I can make a reservation.”
What Jane didn’t know was that Jim already
made a reservation two weeks ago. They now had one week to prepare themselves
for the trip. He went to the phone and called the owners of the cottage anyway
so Jane would think he was just now making the reservation. She couldn’t hear
him talk, so he spoke to the owner just to confirm the time and date of the
reservation. He came back to Jane after he called and told her it was all set for
next week.
Meanwhile, Eric and Kim were enjoying
themselves trying to catch some fish. They would get some nibbles but no real
bites. They didn’t care, just so long as they were having fun.
After about fifteen minutes, Kim got up and
went to pick some wild flowers for her mother. She knew how much it pleased her
mom when she brought home some flowers.
While she was gone, Eric kept sitting near
the pond hoping that he could catch at least one fish. Maybe it was the wrong
time of the day, or it was too hot, because not one fish would bite the worm on
his hook.
He decided to lie down and take a nap, since
the fish were not biting. No sooner did he lie down, he fell asleep. Eric loved
to take naps, because he would start to dream about all kinds of things. Today
he began to dream that he was going to fly around the world.
He started to run. Faster and faster he ran.
As he ran, he began to flap his arms like the birds do. Because he was
dreaming, he soon began to get airborne. He kept flapping his arms as he
climbed higher and higher into the sky.
Up, up he flew. Over the trees and hills, and
soon over some mountains, and then high above the clouds. He then stopped
flapping his arms and stretched them out like the birds do, and began gliding
with the tailwind, so he could rest his arms.
“What a beautiful feeling to be flying like
the birds,” he said to himself
As he was gliding along, he began to think
about all the places he just got through flying over. Montana, Utah, North
Dakota, Michigan, Ohio, New York, Vermont New Hampshire, and Maine. Before he
knew it, he flew over Newfoundland, Greenland, and was on his way towards
Ireland.
He didn’t have to flap his arms hardly at
all, because of the tailwind that was pushing him at a very fast speed. As he
passed over Greenland, he noticed some huge icebergs in the water. He was happy
to see them because he only read about them in books. Now he was seeing them in
person.
Soon he was approaching the coast of Ireland.
He knew it was Ireland because of how green all the land looked. Then he passed
over Great Britain. As he did, he took a good look at the tower of London.
About that time he heard Big Ben ring out the time, nine O’clock.
Eric then banked towards France so he could
see the Eiffel Tower in Paris. And there it was. He wanted to see more of
France, but because there was so much to see in the world, he kept flying on.
He decided to fly down to Africa, because he
wanted to see some of the many different kinds of animals there, such as lions,
tigers, giraffes, monkeys, apes, alligators, rhinos, to name a few. And then he
would go see the pyramids, and the holy city of God, Jerusalem, in Israel.
It didn’t take him long to fly over the Alps
and down over Italy, over the Mediterranean Sea, and there it was, Africa.
Before long he saw all the animals in Africa, even the big elephants. If he
wasn’t dreaming, he would never see all that he saw, that’s for sure.
But that’s what is so nice about dreaming.
You can dream about anything, go anywhere, and do almost anything you want to.
Don’t you agree? After all, nobody knows what is going on in your dreams. And
that is the way it was with Eric. He could dream about anything he wanted to
and there wasn’t anyone to stop him. That is why he enjoyed taking naps and
going to bed at night.
Eric saw a lot of different kinds of animals
on the TV and movies, but to actually see them close up gave him a big thrill.
Even though Eric was dreaming, everything seemed real to him. I’m sure many of
you boys and girls understand how Eric felt because you have had many dreams of
your own.
As Eric was flying over Africa, he saw many
lions, tigers, water buffalo, giraffes, antelopes, zebras, elephants, even
camels, when he passed over the Sahara Desert on his way to Jerusalem.
I have to tell you about one interesting
thing that happened when he was flying over Kenya. While gliding along because
of a tailwind, he spotted an elephant flying in the same direction as he was
going. He couldn’t believe what he was seeing, but then it didn’t bother him
too much because he knew he was dreaming, so anything could happen in a dream.
“Hi Eric,” the elephant called out in a low
gurgling voice. As he did, he made a noise like a trumpet that came from the
front of his trunk.
Eric smiled and called back to the elephant,
“Hi.”
“Where are you going?” asked the elephant.
“Oh, I’m trying to fly around the world,”
replied Eric. “Say, how did you know my name?”
The elephant laughed. “I knew you were going
to ask me that. I’ll tell you, but first let’s go down to that clearing below
because I am very hungry. OK?”
Eric nodded his head. “OK, because I’m a
little bit hungry myself”
So they both banked to the left and drifted
down to a perfect landing. The elephant landed all right. But because of his
huge weight, he made a bump, bumpy noise as he lumbered to a stop.
Eric ran over to the elephant to have a talk
with him. “You sure surprised me when you called out to me in the sky. I never
knew elephants could talk.”
“We elephants usually don’t talk, but I’m an
exception. I don’t remember when I first learned how to talk, because it was
such a long time ago. But I used to hear people talk to each other, and before
I knew it I was talking like them. Oh, by the way, my name is Elliot. I’m very
happy to meet you. And these are my two pals, Al the alligator, and Pat the
rat.”
Eric looked up and sure enough, there was a
huge rat on Elliot’s head, and an alligator on the rear part of his back. He
said, “I’m glad to meet you Elliot, and you Pat the rat, and you too Al the
alligator.
“Hi Eric, I’m glad to meet you too,” said Pat
the rat, with a squeaky voice.
“Me too,” said Al the alligator, with a sort
of gruff voice.
Eric was surprised again to hear them talk.
“Say, where did you both learn to talk?”
“Elliot the elephant taught us. He is a good
teacher,” replied Al the alligator.
“Yeah, that’s right. Many years ago we sort
of became friends, and when they heard me talking, they both wanted to learn to
talk, so that is when it all started. Ever since then we have been talking
together about everything,” said Elliot the elephant.
“Well, how about that. Now I’ve heard
everything. Say, I’m hungry. Is there any place nearby where I can get
something to eat?”
Pat the rat said, “Yes there is. See that
small building over there. They sell all kinds of stuff. They will even make
sandwiches for you. Oh, when you go there, please pick me up two slices of
cheese. And if they have some fish, bring one for Al the alligator. OK?”
“I sure will,” said Eric. “How about you,
Elliot, do you want anything?”
Elliot the elephant laughed. “Nothing for me
Eric. I’ve got all this beautiful grass to eat. You go ahead and get something
for yourself and for Al and Pat.”
After Elliot said that, Eric took off and ran
to where the building was. As he got closer, he noticed it was a convenience
store like the ones in the United States. He should have been surprised that a
convenience store should be in a place like that, but then nothing is
surprising in a dream. Right kids?
When Eric got there, he opened the door and
walked over to the counter. A nice young black man asked him, “What can I do
for you?”
Eric told him he wanted a cheeseburger on a
bun, with French fries, and a soda to wash it down. Also, he ordered some cheese
for Pat the rat and one fresh fish for Al the alligator.
Within five minutes
the young man had everything ready. “Gee, that was fast,” said Eric. He paid
the young man and rushed out the door and ran towards where all his new friends
were.
